The Central Kitsap girls tennis team improved to 5-0 in the Narrows League with a 3-2 victory against Gig Harbor at home Wednesday.
No. 1 singles player Corrine Wurden improved to 5-0 in league matches with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Andrea Gagliano. Calla Chun, CK’s No. 2 singles hitter, also moved to 5-0 in league play thanks to a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win against Gig Harbor’s Alex Jones.
Katie Jackson and Victoria Marshall pulled out a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win against Hayley Erickson and Alyssa Rich in No. 1 doubles action.
“I knew we had a chance today, but I wasn’t going to count any chickens before they hatched,” said 10th-year coach Ken Allen.
He added the season “couldn’t be going much better” and the “season is going pretty well.”
After last year’s remarkable run, when Wurden and then-No. 1 singles player Aya Sugimoto teamed to win the state doubles championship and CK took a share of the team title, Allen wasn’t sure how strong the team would be in 2009.
“What some people may not have noticed, myself included, was how deep we are,” he said. “The players who are on varsity (this year) have been on the team. This is their year and they worked hard to get here.”
Wurden and Chun are locked in as the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, respectively, as are the team’s top two doubles tandems in No. 1 Jackson and Marshall and No. 2 Iori Kimura and Lexi Dewar, but the No. 3 doubles slot has been up for grabs.
Allen said Wednesday the No. 3 doubles slot has gone back and forth between duos Tammy Nguyen and Eden Murray and Kathy McLaughlin and Allie Birnbaumb.
CK was at Olympic in a non-league contest Thursday, but results from that match were unavailable at press time.
The Lady Cougars will compete in the South Kitsap Invite tomorrow before hosting South Kitsap at 3 p.m. April 21.

Singles duo Tracy Landram and Maggie Becker remained undefeated for the Lady Eagles, but it wasn’t enough to beat Olympic Wednesday, as the Lady Trojans edged KSS 4-3.
Landram swept Jamaica Phan 6-0, 6-0 and Becker beat Nicole Tibi 6-1, 6-0. In No. 3 singles action, Oly’s Riza Suriben cruised by Marissa Gray 6-1, 6-1.
The Lady Trojans took three of the four doubles matches to secure the victory. Klahowya’s No. 1 duo of Katy Seal and Nicole Lewandowski beat Melissa Jubane and Jennifer Balbas 6-0, 6-1, but Oly took the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 doubles matches.
KSS is at North Kitsap at 4 p.m. today.
Olympic hosts Port Townsend at 4 p.m. today.
