The Kingston High School basketball teams kicked off the season with its first games on Nov. 30.

The boys team scrapped by, winning their first game 64-62 against Bainbridge.

Though the team played a “jittery” game, head coach Blake Conley said the team started to look stronger in the second half. This included a strong defense from Tucker Bowman, who helped slow the Spartans pace.

Before the half, the Spartans were up 48-40, but it became a back-and-forth battle during the second half.

Zane Ravenholt and Richie Sander also picked up their performance during the second half. Ravenholt ended the game with 21 points and 13 rebounds and Sander ended with 11 points.

The girls team felt their first defeat, though the preseason game against Enumclaw does not have head coach Penny Gienger worried.

The team lost 38-39, but if they played them again, Gienger said the players would have no trouble defeating them.

“We did some good things, like adjusting well to half-court traps,” Gienger said. “But we had a lot of fouls and turnovers.”

Both teams face Port Angeles on Dec. 3. The boys will play a home game in their first Olympic League games of the season. The girls will play an away game.

The junior varsity games start at 5:15 p.m. and the varsity games start at 7 p.m. The game times are the same for both the home and away games.
