Bremerton’s Lawson wins Olympic League singles championship

POULSBO — Garrett Lawson was in control from start to finish as he demolished opponents on his way to an Olympic League singles championship.

Lawson defeated Hayden Woods in the finals, 6-0, 6-0. He took down Tristan Schmid of Kingston, Dylan Heino of Olympic and Raymond Lam of Sequim on his way to the last match.

Woods guaranteed himself at least second place with a semifinal victory over North Kitsap’s Sam Horn. But Horn gave him everything he could handle.

Horn was down 5-1 to Woods in set two and battled all the way back to take a 6-5 lead as he tried to force a third set. But Woods forced a tiebreaker and won it to advance.

Horn took third after defeating Lam, 6-4, 6-0. He will advance to the district tournament, which takes place Oct. 26-27 at Kitsap Tennis and Athletic Center.

The doubles pair of Logan Chmielewski and Jared Reister took second place for North Kitsap. They lost in the finals to Blake Wiker and Thomas Hughes of Sequim, 2-6, 2-4.

North Kitsap’s No. 4 doubles pair, Zach Meek and Cole Walker, will serve as alternates at the district tournament after taking fifth. Chris Schuchart took sixth in singles.
