BMXers high on new track

Facility at SK Community Park has been completely redone — much to the delight of local enthusiasts

Frank Bornhoeft once needed wheels to find a suitable trail for his BMX bike.

But now, the 14-year-old Port Orchard resident doesn’t have to travel any farther than South Kitsap Community Park.

The area to the left of Casey’s Batting Range has been redone to feature myriad mounds for BMX riders.

“It’s pretty nice not having to go to a different town to ride,” said Bornhoeft, who used to travel to Gig Harbor.

That’s just what Chris Marin, 29, wants to hear.

Marin, a 1998 South Kitsap High School graduate, worked with the now-defunct South Kitsap Parks and Recreation Board and later with Kitsap County before getting clearance to work on the area.

With some assistance from Tnt Excavating, which provided a backhoe and mini-excavator for the project, Marin estimated he was among 30 volunteers worked on the trails. The latest work was completed in June, but Marin hopes to extend the path into the woods in December.

The jumps throughout the course vary in angles and heights. Marin said there are plenty of novice and intermediate hills, but cites a deficit in the expert category.

“It’s pretty tame just because of the landscape we’re dealing with, and the time of the year is wrong for building,” he said. “Once it starts raining, we really can start shaping everything out.”

For now, Marin is just happy to have a local BMX option for children. The dump-truck driver for Tnt Excavating admits he’s getting “a little too old” for the trails, but has seen parents bring children as young as 2 to race Big Wheels down the incline.

That’s one reason he prides himself on maintaining the course.

“I want to make sure all the little kids can ride over everything,” he said. “All the kids would fall into the holes (before).”

And Marin is excited for what’s to come in addition to an extension of the trails.

“This park is pretty much going to be a BMX Mecca,” he said. “We’re going to have a racetrack, jumps and a skate park all in one location. That’s pretty much unheard of anywhere else.”
