Bainbridge stuns North Kitsap in shootout

The Bainbridge Spartans came from behind to shock North Kitsap 3-2 (3-1 penalty kicks) Sept. 13 in girls soccer.

Similar to their other games, the Spartans started slowly.

Within minutes, NK’s Evelyn Beers flew down the left sideline and rifled a shot that Spartan goalie Megan Hauschild saved. For nearly 10 minutes, The Vikings kept the ball on Bainbridge’s side of the field.

During their run, Ellie Young scored to put the Vikings up 1-0. In addition, the Vikings had another chance when Beers’ shot bounced off the post and onto the foot of another NK player. However, the Vikings were unable to capitalize. With about 10 minutes remaining, NK’s Sydnee Hogan scored their second goal.

In the second half, NK continued to have their foot on the gas, having a few free-kick shots that were just feet away from scoring. However, Bainbridge began to click with 20 minutes remaining.

Bainbridge’s Hailey Fink scored in the 21st minute off a free kick outside the 18-yard box to reduce the deficit to 2-1. Despite trailing with a handful of minutes left, Bainbridge continued to look for an equalizer.

When the Vikings failed to score with five minutes to go, Bainbridge used the opportunity to counter. The quick counterattack led to a breakaway and tying goal. So, the two squads went to extra time after tying 2-2 in regulation.

In extra time, both teams played very physically, causing penalties across the field for 10 minutes. Since neither team scored, the Spartans and Vikings went to penalty kicks.

NK began that phase with a shot that missed wide. After that, the Vikings only found the net once. On the flip side, Bainbridge scored all three opportunities, giving them a 3-1 victory.
