Athletes prep for the playoffs

POULSBO — It’s hard to believe the 2017 winter sports season is already coming to a close. But Kingston and North Kitsap teams aren’t quite finished yet.

Teams are showing their grit, pushing into the competition of sub-regionals, regionals and districts — vying for their chance to go to state.

Here’s a look at how some of our local teams are doing, and where they’re headed next.

Basketball

The North Kitsap boys (11-0, 17-2) top the Olympic League standings. The Vikings are ranked No. 8 in the state. If they win their final season match against the Olympic Trojans Feb. 2 at home they will be

guaranteed a spot to travel to Yakima to play in the Hardwood Classic State finals, March 1-4.

The Viking girls (10-1, 16-3) are ranked No. 12 in the state. Though they are first in the Olympic League, they need to win their away match against the Olympic Trojans (8-3, 14-5) Feb. 2 in order to have a strong shot to make it to the State finals. Results were unavailable at press time.

Next: The West Central District playoffs Feb. 9-18.

Swimming

The Kingston Buccaneers boys swim team (6-0-0, 7-0-0) has had a stellar season and are undefeated. They beat Klahowya (2-4-0, 2-4-0) in their last season match Jan. 26. The Bucs continued on to the Divisional Invitational Jan. 31. With 29 state-qualifying swim times, they have a lot of flexibility in how they want to swim the upcoming state meet.

The North Kitsap Vikings (4-2-0, 5-2-0) won their last four season meets. In their final meet of the season, they beat Sequim (0-6-0, 0-6-0) with a score of 106-50. The Vikings went on to participate in the Divisional Invitational Jan. 31. If qualified, they will continue onto post-season playoffs.

The post season playoff schedule was unavailable at press time.

Gymnastics

Though the undefeated Port Angeles Roughriders (2-0, 2-0) top the Olympic League standings, the Kingston Buccaneers (2-1, 2-2) trail closely behind. North Kitsap (2-4, 2-4) follows suit.

All three teams participated in the 2A/3A OL_SSC_PCL sub-regional championship Feb. 2 at Auburn Mountain View High School. Results were unavailable at press time.
