The only certainty in life is change

This will be my last column for the Patriot, since I will be retiring as superintendent of the Bremerton School District effective July 1. It is interesting to note that the Patriot, too, is changing its “look” with a new location, as well as a new editor. As they say, the only certainty in life is that there will be change.

SUPERINTENDENT SAYS

This will be my last column for the Patriot, since I will be retiring as superintendent of the Bremerton School District effective July 1. It is interesting to note that the Patriot, too, is changing its “look” with a new location, as well as a new editor. As they say, the only certainty in life is that there will be change.

This column, then, seemed a good opportunity to thank the Patriot’s leadership team for their excellent coverage of the Bremerton School District. Editor Charles Melton has done a wonderful job in reaching out and communicating with us and trying to bring the various staff and activities of the Bremerton School District to the community. Editor Melton and I both agree that a community newspaper should feature what is happening in one’s hometown, especially the schools.

His invitation to our Dare Not To Swear teacher and students for a regular column, I believe, well illustrates the quality and passion of our young people.

The Patriot’s coverage of our musical events as well as all of the awards assemblies that are typical of this time of year showcases the skills and accomplishments of our students. Reporter Wesley Remmer is always present at school district activities, including lengthy school board meetings and school board study sessions.

His coverage of our sports activities shows particular expertise and a love for athletics. In interviews with us, they both ask hard and important questions that the public should know. They are factful, investigatory and thorough in their coverage.

We, in the school district, are often so busy running the schools that we forget to take the time to reach out and communicate what we are doing. My personal thanks and gratitude to Editor Melton and Reporter Remmer for helping us share information about our school district’s needs, challenges and strengths.

I wish them both well in their future assignments. We also would like extend our welcome to Kassie Korich, the new editor of the Bremerton Patriot. Once again, we appreciate all of the hard work that has gone into our local newspaper and, as a Bremerton resident, I look forward to reading more good news about our schools and our community!
