Not too long ago, the Kingston Community News had a little office tucked in downtown Kingston.
Those days – and budgets – are gone. Today we share an office with our sister paper, the North Kitsap Herald, in a Poulsbo Village building.
Poulsbo is a nice town, but to do a good job covering Kingston and the other North End communities it helps to be there. Happily, the invention of laptops, smartphones, wireless internet and motorcycles have left few good excuses for a reporter to be leashed to a desk.
With that in mind, I willbe taking my work to the field in coming months – not coincidentally, in time for summer. Several days each week I will be working from the North End in coffee shops and community centers, and anywhere else an internet connection can be had for the price of a cup of coffee.
I’ll be posting my whereabouts on our facebook page — www.facebook.com/kingstoncommunitynews — and readers are welcome to seek me out to chat, share story ideas or just heckle me while I work. Hopefully this mobile reporting experiment will help me meet more North End residents and share the stories they care about.
I’m also starting a news blog this month, with the oxymoronic title “North of North Kitsap.” You can find it at http://blogs.kingstoncommunitynews.com/north. I’ll use the blog to post stories, photos and news nuggets gleaned from wandering the North End.
If you have feedback, or a secret wireless hotspot to share, write me at editor@kingstoncommunitynews.com. I’ll see you out there.
