The Port Orchard Senior Action Committee came into being about a year ago.
One afternoon I went innocently to the Givens Community Center, which was was holding a public forum for the candidates of the pending county election.
I arrived a tad late and the group’s president, who hosting the meeting, was not, to my surprise, raising the hopes of the questioners as they posed one concern after another.
The answers were always, regrettably, negative.
The operation of the center had been diminished considerably by cuts in funding and the outlook, without help, was dismal.
I was paying close attention. My hand shot in the air.
I suggested they needed someone to work on improving this situation in our growing city. Beautiful Port Orchard was about to go into full bloom and something desperately needed to be done for our senior population.
I couldn’t help but think of the Baby Boomers who were coming, and worried there would be nothing waiting for them.
The room was as one fused by the possibilities of things yet undone.
I walked to the side, where coffee was available, and as I reached for my cup, a voice from across the room bellowed my name and nominated me for chairperson of the Senior Committee.
I knew instantly I could.
I turned to the group of almost 100 people — my heart was racing.
“Be careful,” I said, “I really want to do something real to make things better.”
I knew in an instant this was needed. This was the time.
Someone said, “All in favor?”
“Aye,” the crowd responded.
Several people volunteered that very day, more joined later and so the Senior Action Committee was created.
It was a year ago, and today we are happy to welcome you to the SENIOR CONNECTION created by the Senior Action Committee — “action” being our middle name.
The group is dedicated to seniors, their families and friends of all ages.
We have explored and learned a great deal.
Our committee has researched the possibilities and we have received our not-for-profit status from the state.
We have a lot of work and fun ahead.
Our first Punchbowl Party- Big Band Dance & Social is scheduled for Nov. 8 from 2:30 to 5 p.m. hosted by DJ’s Music Store.
It’s sure to be a blast.
Live sax, trumpet and Big Band sound. What a treat to hear live music.
Bill Carter, on sax, used to play with Count Basie. Harmonica Dave will be our host.
Mayor Lary Coppola and County Commissioner Charlotte Garrido are two of the guests scheduled to appear.
We hope to raise money to launch the SENIOR CONNECTION Web site.

In the meantime, perhaps you can help support Givens Center by coming to their monthly Potluck.
Say hello in person. It’s at noon the first Monday of every month.
Come alone or bring a friend. The Boomers are coming, so let’s get ready together.
