Our beautiful summer season comes to a close

This summer’s been a good one. We’ve had some great days with warmer than usual temperatures

With Labor Day weekend just around the corner, now’s a good time to get out for one last summer event before it’s time to get the kids back in school and pack away the lawn chairs, picnic baskets and wading pools for yet another year.

Although we hope that we will have an “Indian Summer,” with some warm, clear days ahead in September, the reality is that, soon, the rain will return and we’ll be driving home from work in the dark.

This summer’s been a good one. We’ve had some great days with warmer than usual temperatures that have allowed all of us to pursue our favorite adventures outdoors.

The carnival rides have been packed up and have moved on to their next location, but we had a great 2014 Kitsap County Fair & Stampede. There was lots to see and enjoy, including the best county fair corn dogs around. The bull riding and rodeo was enjoyed by many and the John Michael Montgomery concert was an added highlight.

Throughout the summer, we’ve had events such as Whaling Days in Silverdale, along with its parade, lots of great baseball by the Kitsap BlueJackets, and weekly farmers markets in Bremerton and Silverdale. And then, there was the wine festival and the beer fest in Bremerton.

Too, this year Bremerton added its own Sunday flea market which gave residents and visitors another reason to head downtown.

Coming up this weekend is one last event to enjoy — the Blackberry Festival on the waterfront in Bremerton. In its 25th year, this event combines everything blackberry with good food, good music and great arts and crafts.

Labor Day, itself, is meant as a time to honor workers in America and the labor unions that have kept the country strong. On Monday, thank an American worker for their labor.

And on Saturday and Sunday get out and enjoy the last weekend of summer by stopping by the Blackberry Festival.
