Bremerton schools’ plan to create a magnet school emphasizing science, technology, engineering and math classes is another example of innovation in the district.

And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist, or a brain surgeon, to understand that beyond preparing Bremerton youth for jobs at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, it is preparing them for jobs even bigger and better.

Not everybody can be an engineer, and the world still needs artists, philosophers and actors, but it is a step toward improving our education system.

It does bring up the question of why all students, in every district, aren’t given the chance to be immersed in a subject. Be it math or poetry, regardless of what career a student ultimately chooses, the experiences and study habits picked up in these programs will be with them for a lifetime.

Bremerton has shown itself to be forward-thinking. From its all-day kindergarten classes, to its Spanish language immersion program, it has set itself apart as willing to try something new.

This latest announcement deserves sincere kudos.
