The Bremerton City Council, given the chance, looks like they are finally getting it right.

Sometimes that is what’s needed, be it a person, persons, or a flock of politicians — multiple chances.

It now appears, despite the wing-wringing over what may happen if somebody complains about their neighbors’ chickens, the Council is prepared to take a vote on whether to allow a brood of four female chickens to be kept by residents.

Many who had doubts have been persuaded, bad information has been clarified and now, finally, we can move forward.

The chicken debacle has been instructive for Council observers, especially because there should not have been a debacle. Public officials regularly blame those they serve for not being involved. In this case, when people organized and petitioned their government for a change, they were shooed away.

When they persisted, some councilmembers dug in.

Now we’ve seen progress, we’ve seen what can happen when residents come together.

We’ve also seen that despite getting it wrong, with a little persistence, maybe Bremerton politicians can be convinced to do the right thing.
