Swede Thoreson

May 4, 1929 – July 30, 2019

Born 90 years ago in Miller, SD to Olaf and Alice Thoreson, the family lived at 760 Lidstrom Road when Swede graduated from South Kitsap High School. He went on to Eastern Washington State University with a football scholarship, playing for the Eagles who won their Evergreen Conference in 1950, putting him in the Athletics Hall of Fame. He married Barbara Boutwell in 1951 and began his high school teaching career in Omak. With two young children, Swede and Barbara moved to California in 1958 where he taught Industrial Arts and coached several sports at Mills High School in Millbrae. Later he earned a Masters and became a Guidance Counselor, and eventually Assistant Principal. Swede was an avid tennis player, traveler, mentor, and Kiwanian. Each summer the family made the road trip back to Port Orchard to visit his parents and their long-time neighbors, the Zink Family. His children fondly remember walking to town down the hill and along the bay, picking lots of raspberries and apples on the property, eating at Myhre’s Cafe, and riding the ferries from Seattle. After his retirement in 1987, he and Barbara moved to Glen Ellen in the Sonoma Valley. Swede was always “doing”, tinkering in his workshop, gardening, attending Mills reunions, and volunteering. He will be forever remembered and missed by his wife, Barbara, and children Lori, Gracia, and Arne (Chris Janus), and grandson Dylan (Shelby White-Furtado). An Open House farewell will be held outdoors in the Glen Ellen garden on September 15th, 1-4pm. Donations in his memory may be sent to: Hospice By The Bay, 355 W Napa Street, Suite B, Sonoma CA 95476 or www.hospicebythebay.org
