Peter J. Hernan, 77

Peter J. Hernan of Poulsbo died Nov. 29, 2004. He was 77.

He was born to John J. and Winifred A. (Reagan) Hernan June 5, 1927 in Phoenix, Ariz.

Hernan married Georgette C. Allen on Dec. 12, 1946 in Fallon, Nev.

He graduated from San Jose High School in San Jose, Calif. in 1950. He graduated from San Jose State College and then University of Southern California in Los Angeles, Calif. and U.S. Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif.

Hernan served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1947 and 1956-1976, achieving the rank of Commander. He earned the National Defense Service Medal with a Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star Second Award, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a Commander in the U.S. Navy (retiring in 1976) and served as a Kitsap County Fire Commissioner.

Hernan was a member of the Sons of Norway and enjoyed political debates.

He is survived by his wife Georgette C. (Allen) Hernan of Poulsbo; sons Peter J. Jr. (Marlene) Hernan of Cupertino, Calif., and Michael J. Hernan and Kevin T. (Gina) Hernan both of Santa Cruz, Calif.; daughters Patty L. Free of Seattle and Katie (Linda) Hernan of Kenmore; sisters Patricia Grube and Mary (Robert) Mullis both of Santa Cruz, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Hernan was preceded in death by his daughter Maggie M. Smith and brother John J. Hernan III.

A memorial service was held Dec. 3 at The Stone Chapel in Poulsbo. Cremation followed at The Stone Chapel.
