Nadene M. Edwards, 96

Poulsbo resident Nadene Meek Edwards died Feb. 15, 2006 in Silverdale. She was 96.

Edwards was born to Ethel and Clarence Frisbie in Awasa, Iowa on Oct. 23, 1909.

She married Milton Meek in February 1933 in Idaho.

Edwards graduated from Whatcom High School in Bellingham in 1925. In 1944, she and her husband and children moved to Poulsbo where he took a job as a junior-senior high school principal.

Edwards spent much of her time volunteering for the community. She started the local PTA, co-founded the Ne-Si-Ka Garden Club and the Lemolo Home-Ec. She volunteered for 10 years at Holden Village, Lutheran Retreat in Chelan. She was a cook at North Kitsap High School and ran a laundromat in Bremerton.

Edwards was awarded the first Rotary Citizen of the Year in 2003. She enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Europe and Australia. She was honored as the Citizen of the Year by the Poulsbo Senior Center in 2003. Until the age of 92, she continued to volunteer to drive senior members around town in her little red 1968 Camaro.

Edwards is survived by her son Jerry M. Meek of Poulsbo; daughters Carole (Terry) Smith of Central Point, Ore. and Judy (Nick) Mason of Leavenworth; adopted family Luke Morgan, Kathy Ewing, Christian and Eliana; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands Milton Meek and James Edwards, brothers Bill and Bob Frisbie and parents Ethel and Clarence Frisbie.

At her request, in lieu of a memorial service, a private family gathering will be held in her memory.
