Loyd Myrvang, 83
Loyd Myrvang died on Oct. 2 at home. He was born at Swedish Hospital in Seattle to Nels and Clara [Myre] Myrvang on Aug. 24, 1925. He was raised in Silverdale until the age of 12 when the family moved to Poulsbo. Myrvang attended Franklin Grade School and graduated with the class of 1943 from North Kitsap High where he was senior class president. In high school he was active in baseball, band, and drama and rode his Harley-Davidson motorcycle to Cle Elum for flying lessons.
He served in the Navy near the end of World War II in flight training and graduated from Western Washington College in Bellingham in 1950. On March 21, 1950, he married Mary Beth Sterneman. They moved to Kahlotus, where he taught in a one-room school for two years. He taught junior high at Central Kitsap School District for 17 years before retiring in 1967. He went on to work in the great outdoors — farming, raising cattle, and bulldozing full time until just a few years ago. He was an active member of First Lutheran Church, the local Gideons, and the Olympic Squadron.
He was preceded in death by his sister Lorraine and her husband, Richard Jelsing. Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Beth; children Constance (Denis) Stenwick, Michael (Lynn) Myrvang, Cheryl (Mike) Tague all of Poulsbo, and Penny (Dave) Barta of Goldendale; sisters Lenore (Bob) Ley of Poulsbo, Lila (Gary) Morris of Hansville, 21 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, Myrvang requested donations be made to First Lutheran Church of Poulsbo, the Gideons, or Through the Bible Radio Network.
A memorial service is being held at First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo at 2 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 12.
