Fern McKnight

Fern McKnight, 99

Fern McKnight died at her home in Poulsbo May 12, 2006. She was 99.

She was born Oct. 1, 1906 in Preston, Idaho to William Cobern and Myrtle Frew.

The family moved to Seattle in 1910. McKnight was a gifted musician and began teaching violin at 12 years of age and subsequently, taught piano, organ and accordion for over 60 years. At age 16, she met her future husband, John McKnight, who was her orchestra director.

She and John operated “McKnights Music” in Ellensburg for 10 years. In 1969, they moved to Hansville where they enjoyed many years with special friends and family. At that time, they formed a musical group, the Windjammers, which performed for over 20 years through out Kitsap County.

McKnight was an artist, having painted many beloved Hansville beach scenes. She was a member of the Kitsap Porcelain Painters, and for 35 years, a member of the Poulsbo Senior Center. She got her passport at age 82 and traveled the world for eight years.

McKnight is survived by her daughter, Lois Long-Stevens; son Richard McKnight; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.

Her husband, John, preceded her in death in 1981.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Poulsbo Senior Center at 2 p.m. June 10.
