Erskine Ramsey Sanders

Nov. 7, 1922 – Jan. 22, 2020

Erskine “Sandy” Ramsey Sanders of Bainbridge Island passed away on January 22, 2020 at Martha & Mary Nursing Home at the age of 97.

He was born on November 7, 1922 in Beltona, Alabama to Cecil and Martha Sanders.

Sandy graduated from high school in 1942 in Alabama and then joined the Navy from 1942-1945. He married his wife Phyllis and moved to Bainbridge Island in 1945. He bought a barber shop in Winslow which became known as “Sandy’s Barber Shop” in 1948 and sold the business in 1990. Sandy gave many first haircuts to Island residents throughout the years.

He was an avid hunter, fishermen, gardener and had a love for birds. The “Mayor of Manzanita” will be missed by many.

Sandy was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Sanders. He is survived by his son Doug Sanders (Marsha) of Bainbridge Island, granddaughters Jennifer Hammar (Mike) of Issaquah and Gretchen Halvorsen (Boyer) of Sammamish. He also has four great grandchildren, Addison & Isabel Hammar, Halle & Martin Halvorsen.

At the request of Sandy, we will be having a private family graveside service at Seabold Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cook Family Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the Kitsap Audubon Society, P.O. Box 961, Poulsbo, WA 98370.

The family would like to thank the wonderful care he received from Martha & Mary as well as Franciscan Hospice. Also, to all of his neighbors and close friends that provided support during his illness.
