Dorothy Ruth Holm

Dorothy Ruth Holm passed away on April 8, 2014 at Martha & Mary Nursing Home.

She was born in her grandmother’s house in Petaluma, Calif., to Carleton and Ruth (Oellig) Dorroh, on Aug. 9, 1915. She weighed just over 2 pounds but lived to be 98 years old. A farmer’s daughter, her childhood was spent on various ranches throughout the area.

After graduation from Petaluma High School, she became a beautician. While working in San Francisco, she met Arnold Holm, the love of her life. They married in Petaluma on June 28, 1942 and spent their honeymoon driving to Poulsbo, where they would build their new home in Lemolo on the Holm family property. Arnold died in 1970.

Dorothy loved her family, cats, playing the piano, and watching the boats on the bay. She was a longtime member of Vinland Lutheran Church and had belonged to the Order of Eastern Star since 1938. Her ready smile and cheerfulness will be missed by all who knew her.

She leaves behind her children, Marilyn (Holm) Vackert and Alan (Luanne) Holm of Poulsbo, and Russel Holm of Edgewood; grandchildren, Serena (Deric) Merino of San Diego, Eric Vackert, Neal (Deanna) Holm, Michael (Jennifer) Holm, all of Poulsbo; and her great-grandchildren, Gabriel Merino, and Astella, Deacon, Garett, Scarlett, and Isaac Holm. She is also survived by her nephew, Robert Dorroh; niece, Etta Yvonne Jensen; two grandnieces, two grandnephews, and several great-grandnephews.

Family and friends are invited to attend her memorial service at Vinland Lutheran Church on May 12, 3 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Vinland Lutheran Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 2134, Poulsbo, WA 98370.
