Darrell M. Spahn, 87

Darrell Martin Spahn of Bremerton died Jan. 27, 2006 in Bremerton. He was 87.

He was born to Edwin and Viola Spahn on the family farm in Hopkins, Mich. on May 21, 1918.

Spahn met Ethel Lakenes at a USO Dance in Silverdale and they married in 1943. They divorced and he met Fay Bussing while commuting to Seattle on the Bainbridge/Seattle Ferry and they married in 1965.

He graduated from Hopkins School, entered the U.S. Army and served in World War II. After leaving the Army, Spahn worked at Seattle Cedar and The Bremerton Shipyard. In 1948, he became a longshoreman and later the dispatcher for Port Gamble Local 51 of the ILWU before retiring in 1980.

Spahn enjoyed attending The Salvation Army Church in Bremerton with his wife and especially enjoyed the company of the Baker family.

He also enjoyed fishing, playing pinochle with family and friends and vegetable gardening.

Spahn is survived by his wife; daughter Claudia (Dan) Kilburn of Poulsbo; stepsons Lester (Cheryl) Bussing of Silverdale and Dennis (Fern) Bussing of Longview; stepdaughter Karen (Ralph) Klingshern of Bothell; brother Russell (Dorthea) Spahn of Frostproof, Fla.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Katheryn Emmons.

Services were held Jan. 30 at The Salvation Army Church in Bremerton.
