Catherine ‘Kay’ M. Charleston

Catherine “Kay” M. Charleston died March 6, 2007, in Bremerton. She was 89. Mrs. Charleston was born March 16, 1917, in Enterprise, Ore., to Walter and Mary Lindsay.

Kay worked in the shipyards in Portland, Ore. during WWII, and received a commendation for “Production Idea,” from the War Production Board in Washington D.C., January 1945. It was submitted as an Award of Merit by the Kaiser Company Inc., Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation for suggesting/inventing a new “Tack Weld Procedure” which was an outstanding contribution to the conduct of our vital war production.

She was involved in printing and advertising sales up and down the Oregon and Washington coasts.

In 1982, Mrs. Charleston started the Senior Alert, a local Kitsap County paper for seniors and it grew to a circulation of more than 10,000.

She also found time to volunteer thousands of hours to the success and support of seniors and her community.

In January 1984, she was one of five winners out of 109 nominees for the Golden Rule award presented by J.C. Penney Co. Inc. She sold the paper in 1987 due to health issues.

Survivors include her sons Walter G. (Gloria) Yeager of Poulsbo and Victor L. Yeager of Bartlett, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren.
