Construction will begin July 10 to connect White Horse Golf Course to the North Kitsap Heritage Park using existing logging roads on Olympic Property Group land.

“We hope to have the trails completed within a week or so,” said Elizabeth Wilson, vice president of OPG who is overseeing the project.

The trails will be in what is known as the Heritage Park option property. It separates the park and OPG’s proposed Arborwood development. The county has the option to purchase the property at a later date to add to the park.

The trail system will now connect to Norman Road to the northeast, providing a trail corridor that completes the link from Indianola to Kingston, according to Jon Rose, OPG’s president.

Most of the trail will be along existing logging roads, said Wilson. Only about 800 feet of new construction will need to be done. No motorized vehicles are allowed, but hiking, biking and horseback riding are allowed.

The trails being opened are considered temporary, Wilson said, until the lines of the county’s easement purchase have been finalized.

Rose noted that when the newest section of trail is done, only a connection over Grover’s Creek on the west side of Miller Bay Road across from the Heritage Park will be needed to complete a trail link to Port Gamble from Indianola.
