UPDATE: SoundRunner service was canceled on Wednesday morning due to high winds.

KINGSTON — Strong wind and waves forced the Port of Kingston to cancel SoundRunner sailings to Seattle Monday evening.

The passenger ferry Spirit of Kingston departed the port on its 4:20 p.m. sailing but returned to the dock after encountering foul weather on Puget Sound. The remainder of the evenings sailings have been canceled, according to a notice posted on the port’s website.

The port’s backup ferry, Victoria Express, has not yet been certified to run in place of the Spirit of Kingston, SoundRunner Manager Karen Arnold said. The Express can sail in rougher weather than the Spirit, though its top speed is slower.

The port canceled SoundRunner sailings on Thursday and Friday last week to allow an engine to be replaced on the Spirit. That engine swap didn’t happen, Arnold said, because the port is still negotiating with the engine warranty company. The Spirit has been operating on three of its four engines since October when one of its engines malfunctioned.
