What’s next for Tracyton?

The school district will host an informational meeting on Monday, April 29, outlining plans to demolish the main building this summer.

The Central Kitsap School District will host parents and community members to talk about future plans for the site of former Tracyton Elementary School.

The informational meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, April 29, at the Jenne-Wright Administration Center, 9210 Silverdale Way NW, Silverdale.

Demolition of the main school building, which was closed in 2007, is scheduled to begin in June. This demolition may cause increases in heavy equipment noise and traffic near the site, the district said.

The public meeting will include a short presentation followed by an opportunity for participants to ask questions.

The demolition’s cost was estimated by the district earlier this year at $750,000, but it will eliminate a large amount of liability. The district had also said a community field will be put in where the main building now stands along with the former school’s baseball diamond.

The State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction keeps an inventory of districts’ square footage. By demolishing the unneeded space at Tracyton, the district will free up space for additional funding from Public Instruction for capital projects like the new Jackson Park Elementary School.

Despite all the costs of cleanup, refurbishment and demolition, the district said it has been saving $800,000 annually since closing the school five years ago.
