A private contractor working today to repair a broken pipe under a parking lot near Hi Joy Bowl on Bethel Avenue inadvertently broke a pressurized side-branch water line, according to Port Orchard Mayor Tim Matthes.
Quick repairs at the site have been made and the 3-inch water line is back in service.
Matthes said the broken line initially was thought to be the main water line to the adjoining area. “So, the the outcome is that it turned out to be not as bad as we first thought,” Matthes said.
Amy Miller, South Kitsap School District spokeswoman, said the high school considered bringing in bottled water for lunch services in the event a broken water main impacted operations there, but that action wasn’t necessary.
A small sink hole developed late last month where a water pipe broke. Repairs have been under way since then.
