KINGSTON — A new training kiosk and garden shed at the Kingston Village Green P-Patch opened to the public June 15.

The opening coincided with a “Get Ready to Garden” workshop led by Master Gardener Kathryn Kenyon, who recently relocated to Kingston from Virginia. She provided professional tips on transplanting and weeding. Kenyon earned her Master Gardener certification from the University of Virginia Extension Service, honing her skills on her own property, a five-acre retreat center where she built and maintained organic gardens.

The Kingston Village Green P-Patch is a community garden within the Kingston Village Green complex. P-Patches are an open space resource for all members of the community, not just gardeners. The Kingston Village Green P-Patch exists to enable and empower local residents to grow healthy, organic produce for themselves, their families, and local food banks.

The Village Green is being developed by the community through the Village Green Foundation. Apartments for older residents are under construction. A community meeting about a new library branch at Village Green is scheduled June 13, 6:30-8 p.m., at North Kitsap Fire & Rescue, 26642 Miller Bay Road NE, Kingston. Village Green Park opened on Aug. 13, 2009; the park is governed by the Village Green Metropolitan Park District (www.myvillagegreen.org) and is supported by property owners through a property tax levy.
