Vikings’ last inning rally overcomes Sequim

POULSBO — The Sequim Wolves’ only defensive miscue Monday afternoon cost them a non-league game as North Kitsap gathered its feet for a rally as Bubby Ditmer sprinted to the Viking victory, 6-5.

With the win, NK pulls its record up to 2-2-1 overall and is now in the middle of a doubleheader with Bremerton, with the first game Tuesday and the second game at 3:45 p.m. today at NKHS. With two wins over the Knights, the Vikes could earn a little redemption in the Narrows League after being swept by CK last week.

“My concern is that we are not making the routine plays, we’re not doing the little things,” said head coach Jeff Weible. “If we don’t do those, we’re not gonna win.”

A chief weakness for NK early this season has been an inability to produce with runners in scoring position. The lack of clutch at-bats cost the Vikes the second game against CK in the final inning, but against Sequim, NK found a cure.

“Today was the first time in 11 innings where we had guys in scoring position with two outs and somebody final got a hit to drive a run in,” Weible noted.

After the Wolves broke ahead on the scoreboard 2-1 in the top of the fourth, North worked itself into a two-out situation with Jordan Nakaya on third and James Smith on second.

Viking Joel Camp launched a deep rocket to right field, scoring both runners and giving NK a 3-2 advantage halfway through the game.

But in the top half of the next inning, Sequim rallied back as NK pitching stumbled. Sequim’s Garrett Wagner first ripped an RBI single off NK’s Brett Whitman, then Kelly Wells took the mound and gave up a sacrifice fly that moved Wagner into scoring position.

Wagner then scored on a passed ball that eluded NK’s catcher Jason Frieboth.

After holding the Vikings scoreless in the fifth, the Wolves came out in the top of the sixth still swinging. Two short fly balls quickly put two runners on base, then Sean Dinius lined an RBI single to give Sequim the 5-3 lead.

North’s defense stopped the bleeding as Kramer Uvila and Smith turned a double play to end the inning.

NK’s bats were silent in the sixth, but they came to life in the bottom of the seventh after Nakaya — in his first pitching performance — retired the Wolves in their final at-bat.

“I was proud that they came back, any win’s a good win,” Weible said. “We did the little things correctly that inning.”

In the seventh, Ryan Anderson reached base thanks to Sequim’s only error, then Jordan Tucker followed through with an RBI triple to right field. Then Joe Benish stepped up to score Tucker with a soft liner just over the infield.

Bubby Ditmer then came in to pinch-run and scurried around the bases to complete the NK comeback, giving the Vikings a 6-5 win.

Next up, North will finish the second game of a doubleheader with Bremerton at 3:45 p.m. today at NKHS. Then they will host Gig Harbor in the first of a doubleheader at 3:45 p.m. April 4.
