The occasion marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Naval Base Kitsap hosted a bell ringing ceremony Sunday morning.

The bell tolled at 11 a.m.; the hour at which, on November 11, 1918, an armistice between the Allied forces and Germany effectively ended World War I.

The ceremony was held “to honor and remember the U.S. military members who served and sacrificed for their country,” a Navy press release states.

Traditionally, bells are tolled in honor of fallen soldiers on special occasions, the release said.

“What we do here is important – protecting our nation, protecting our allies, protecting our freedom,” said Capt. Alan Schrader, Commanding Officer of Naval Base Kitsap. “But we must take today, as we do every year, and remember our fallen.”
