BREMERTON – The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) is scheduled to fire its 40 mm saluting guns Monday in honor of Memorial Day.

Starting at noon, those in the Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton area can expect to hear a shot every minute for 21 minutes.

Naval tradition states all capable ships render this salute before fully raising the American flag from half-mast.

The ammunition fired will be blanks and pose no risk to the surrounding communities. The salute will not affect daily operations on the base.
