Two last-minute changes jolt dynamic of election races

23rd, 26th Legislative District seats are now competitive in upcoming elections.

PORT ORCHARD — Two last-minute candidate shuffles on the final day of election filing on May 18 — one by addition, the other by subtraction — jolted the upcoming Kitsap County-area races in the 23rd and 26th legislative districts.

The surprises impacted two seats in the state Legislature — one in the Senate, the other in the House.

State Rep. Sherry Appleton, D-Poulsbo

On the last filing day of the week-long process, eight-term incumbent Rep. Sherry Appleton of the 23rd Legislative District picked up an opponent. Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson, who filed to run without a political affiliation for the Position 1 seat, will face the Poulsbo Democrat in a high-profile race.

And in the 26th District, the competition for the state Senate seat became more opaque when Jan Angel, the veteran Republican incumbent who filed earlier in the week, decided to withdraw her candidacy.

“It has been my extreme honor to serve the people of Kitsap County and the 26th District for the past 18 years …” Angel said in a news release from Olympia. “Thank you for allowing me to be of service.”

State Sen. Jan Angel, R-Port Orchard

Angel was first elected as a Kitsap County commissioner in 1999 and served two terms. She then captured a 26th District state representative seat and ran for re-election twice, serving five years in the House. Angel has yet to indicate why she abruptly left the race, where she was favored to win another term.

Erickson, who easily won a third term as mayor in November, said she was “deeply disturbed” by the legislative reaction to the Public Records Act, a bill that would have exempted lawmakers from state public records laws.

Appleton’s 23rd District seatmate Rep. Drew Hansen, D-Poulsbo, will retain his position by running unopposed. Dave Comeau of Bremerton, who had filed for the seat earlier in the week, withdrew on May 18.

In the southern part of the county, the 26th District will feature competitive races for the state Senate and both of its House seats.

In the district encompassing Port Orchard, Bremerton, Gig Harbor and South Kitsap, Angel’s departure sets up a showdown between Marty McClendon, a Gig Harbor Republican who entered the race following the incumbent’s withdrawal, and Emily Randall of Port Orchard, a Democratic newcomer. Bill Scheidler, an independent also from Port Orchard, is the third candidate for the state Senate seat. McClendon lost a fairly close general-election race against Cyrus Habib for lieutenant governor.

Also in the 26th: Two challengers seeking to unseat incumbent state Rep. Jesse Young — Naomi Evans, a Republican from Bremerton, and Connie FitzPatrick of Gig Harbor, a Democrat — filed on May 14.

In the district’s state representative race for Position 2, incumbent Michelle Caldier, R-Port Orchard, also is being challenged by Democrat Joy Stanford of Gig Harbor; Republican Randy Boss of Gig Harbor; and Marco Padilla of Bremerton, who filed with a “People Over Party” affiliation.

Longtime 35th District state Sen. Tim Sheldon, D-Hoodsport, is running for another term against a crowded field of challengers. He will face Irene Bowling, a Democrat from Bremerton; and Republicans Marco Brown of Belfair, John Martin of Olympia and George Sevier of Shelton.

Dan Griffey of Allyn and Drew MacEwen of Union, both incumbents, have filed for re-election to the House in the 35th District. Griffey will be opposed in his Position 1 race by two Democrats: James Thomas of Shelton and Nik Grobins of Rochester. MacEwen is facing David Daggett, a Democrat from Shelton, for his Position 2 seat.

U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer, D-Tacoma, is seeking re-election to his 6th Congressional District seat. Douglas Dightman, a Republican from Shelton, and Tyler Myles Vega of Tacoma, who is running under the Progressive Party banner, filed on May 15 to oppose the congressman.

Kitsap County races

In Kitsap County races, Paul Andrews, a Democrat from Port Orchard, filed for the auditor’s seat being vacated by Delores Gilmore. Opposing Andrews is Richard Huddy, also a Democrat, from Bremerton.

Candidates are running unopposed for six county seats: Alison Sonntag, a Democrat from Port Orchard, is running unopposed for county clerk. Phil Cook, R-Silverdale, is seeking re-election as county assessor. Kitsap County Sheriff Gary Simpson, who filed as a Democrat, is running for re-election.

Also running unopposed are Ed Wolfe, R-Bremerton, who sits in the Kitsap County Commissioner Dist. 3 seat, and Meredith Green of Poulsbo, a Democrat, who is running for treasurer. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Chad Enright, a Democrat from Silverdale, is unopposed for the top job as prosecuting attorney. Current county prosecutor Tina Robinson chose not to run again.

Court races

Pat Dawson of Port Orchard and Jeff Wallis of Bremerton (both stated no party preference), and Republican Russ Reuther of Silverdale, have filed for the coroner’s seat.

Supreme Court Justice Position 2 candidates are Susan Owens of Tumwater and (Zamboni) John Scannell of Bremerton. Jeffrey Jahns, a Port Orchard incumbent, is seeking re-election to the nonpartisan position as District Court Judge, Department 2. Also running for District Court seats are three Silverdale residents: Claire A. Bradley, Department 1; Marilyn Paja, Department 3; and Kevin P. Kelly, Department 4.

Filers for the Public Utility District No. 1, Commissioner District 3, seat are Marcus Hoffman of Silverdale; Nate Andrews of Bremerton; Dennis Veloni of Silverdale; Heather Pauley of Silverdale; and Ed Hallda of Bremerton.

In the May 25 print edition, this article stated that Kitsap County Commissioner Edi Wolfe is running “opposed” in his race for relection. The sentence meant to state that Wolfe is running unopposed, as is Meredith Green for treasurer.
