Taken from a report by Port Orchard police:

A traffic stop at the intersection of South Kitsap Boulevard and Pottery Avenue, around 2 p.m. on May 23 led to two arrests.

Police initially stopped a 26-year-old woman for failing to transfer the title on her white Acura.

During the stop, they ran a report on the car’s vehicle identification number, and discovered that it was stolen.

Police searched the vehicle and discovered the car’s original rear license plate inside the car, and a shaved key in the ignition.

They arrested the woman who had been driving the car.

She said that she wanted to make sure that her three children were safe, so police went with her and her grandmother to her apartment, one of the Cedar Heights Apartments, to pick the children up.

Police knocked on the apartment’s door, and no one answered.

They went to the rear door of the apartment and knocked again, but again, they got no response.

They announced that it was the police and there was a patrol vehicle within view of the window.

Then, they looked into the apartment’s rear window, and saw a man walk into the front room and turn off a light.

Police were  concerned that the woman had left her children alone, or with someone she didn’t know.

She then gave them a key to the apartment.

They tried to open the door, but were prevented, at first, by a hotel-style latch.

They asked the woman for permission to force an entry, and she said that they could.

Police allegedly shouldered the door open, and entered saying, “Police department. Show me your hands.”

They walked around the first floor, and didn’t see anyone.

Then, they started walking up the stairs, and heard snoring coming from the room at the top of the stairs.

They entered and discovered a crib and two children laying on a bed with a 28-year-old white male pretending to be asleep.

They arrested and booked him into jail for possession of a stolen vehicle, obstruction and a DUI warrant from Port Orchard Municipal Court.

The grandparents took the children.
