SUQUAMISH — The Suquamish Tribe awarded nearly $70,000 to various non-profit groups and schools in the community recently using its quarterly Appendix X funds. A total of $67,900 was given to 13 non-profit agencies as part of the tribe’s quarterly charitable contribution program.

For the first quarter of 2004, the tribe bestowed the following North End organizations with funding: ShareNet Food Bank, $5,000; North Kitsap Girls and Boys Club, $10,000; Suquamish Elementary — Accelerated Reading Program, $5,000; Suquamish Elementary — Family Reading Night, $4,000; Suquamish Elementary — Leapfrog Schoolhouse Kits, $4,100; North Kitsap Youth Development Community Development Foundation, $3,000; Soundworks Job Center, $4,500; Friends of Miller Bay, $5,000; Suquamish Elementary — Multi-age Program, $2,300; Breidablik Elementary — Alexis’ Dream Project, $4,000; and Suquamish Education Program-Summer School, $15,000.

Two programs outside the North End also received funding — the Bainbridge Land Trust received $5,000 and the Bremerton High School Senior Grad Committee was awarded $1,000.

The money is generated from the profits of the electronic gaming machines at the Suquamish Clearwater Casino.

The tribe seeks requests for funds up to $5,000 to support youth education activities, mental and general health, and environmental preservation and restoration. However, organizations are encouraged to apply for charitable causes that are not within these priority areas.

The tribe continues to encourage non-profit organizations and charitable groups to apply for the Appendix X Community Awards Program.
