Traffic stop in Poulsbo becomes officer-involved shooting

A Kitsap County sheriff’s deputy is under investigation following a traffic stop that turned into a shooting Saturday night.

According to incident documents the deputy pulled over a suspected intoxicated driver south of the intersection of Highway 305 and Sol Vei Street in Poulsbo, and reportedly discharged his firearm at the vehicle.

The suspect was uninjured and arrested, incident report say. After alerting dispatch that shots had been fired several other law enforcement units, including Poulsbo police, responded.

State requires that an “independent investigation to be completed to inform a determination of whether the use of deadly force met the good faith standard and satisfied other applicable laws and policies,” the Kitsap Critical Incident Response Team took over the investigation of the shooting.

KCIRT is an investigative body made up of regional law enforcement officials, but does not include members of force in which the officer being investigated is part of.

Law enforcement agencies were out in force Saturday night to put extra empahsis on traffic safety, specifically focusing on stopping illegal street racing.

The North Kitsap Herald will provide updates on this investigation as more information becomes available.
