Third of July set to spark next week

Poulsbo’s annual Third of July celebration will once again light up the shores of Liberty Bay.

Run this year by the Viking Fest Corporation and sponsored by the Clearwater Casino and City of Poulsbo, Third of July will bring a supply of concessionaires to Waterfront Park, along with the contemporary Navy Band, Passage, which will play at the Kvelstad Pavilion at 8:30 p.m.

Fireworks are scheduled to go off at 10:15 p.m., weather permitting. The show will be set to music, and will include one of the largest displays ever launched in the county, the event Web site states.

Food booths will open at 5 p.m.

The event came close to cancellation this year, as its usual coordinators faced economically-spun funding troubles, along with hard-to-meet deadlines. Soon after the announcement was made, the city of Poulsbo declared it wouldn’t let the holiday go by uncelebrated. Clearwater Casino stepped in to foot two-thirds of the cost, but more is needed.

“The oohs and aahs of the large crowds that watch the show each year testify to its beauty and popularity,” the Web site states. “Small donations on the order of $10 to $20 from individuals, if multiplied by many hundreds of donations, will go a long way toward filling the funding shortage.”
