Options. Exploring them is key in running a successful business. Some work out, some don’t. But if they are not reviewed, the propensity to get in a rut and stay there is overwhelming.
When this paper asked that the City of Poulsbo consider the Electronic Data Systems (EDS) building, that’s what we had in mind. And while we were perturbed by some missing pieces in the process, ensuring that the city at least seriously looked into the possibility of relocating there was our goal all along. What’s the point of having alternatives if they’re not being studied, after all?
Later this month, the Greater Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce will hear again about the proposed creation of a new transportation system from Olhava to Winslow. MagLev. Is the technology interesting, absolutely. Is it practical for Poulsbo, many say no. Is it an option that the city should at least look into in an attempt to alleviate traffic on State Route 305? Why not?
It is, after all, an option. And although some may argue that it isn’t a viable one at all — something which has yet to be determined — we feel it should still be looked into.
Waste of time?
That’s a tough position to argue because can one ever really say that looking into other alternatives is squandering resources. What about streamlining? Sure, just imagine how much more work would get done in Poulsbo if city officials only reviewed one plan on every project and moved ahead to realize it. It would be like a machine.
But in being so, it would miss quite a few very unique opportunities along the way. Looking into options, reviewing alternatives and trying to do what is best for residents is something every government is tasked with.
It’s not the easiest job around to be sure and one that’s made that much more difficult for city departments and elected officials when options are introduced into the equation.
But that’s the way it is. We like the fact that city officials are doing this and realize that you never know what might work best until you look into a few options.
