PORT ORCHARD — Last weekend was the inaugural Narrows League Invitational for tennis teams around the West Sound, and the North Kitsap Vikings probably hope there will be more.
The Vikings’ depth earned them 30 points and earned them a tie for first place during the eight-team tournament at South Kitsap High School.
Bremerton ended up winning the tournament because the Knights won a larger percentage of their matches.
“It’s a tournament that benefited us,” Head coach Jay DeVries said. “Our depth paid off.”
Top performers for the Vikings included Jordan Prince and Aaron Beal, who took first place in the No. 4 doubles bracket; Alex Haupt and Eric Lander, who took second in No. 1 doubles; Evan Faulk and Nick Dillon, who took third in No. 2 doubles; Jared Bernard and Micah Drury, who took fifth in No. 3 doubles; Dan Peck, who took fifth in No. 1 singles; and Spencer Thomas, who took second in No. 2 singles.
Prince and Beal earned wins over doubles teams from Bremerton, Central Kitsap and Puyallup to sweep their way through the bracket.
Their final match was a 6-1, 3-6(10-6) win.
Haupt and Lander won their first two matches before falling 6-2, 6-2 in the third to a team from South Kitsap.
Faulk and Dillon earned a win in the first round, a loss in the second and a 6-3, 6-2 win in the finals.
Peck went 1-2, falling to Olympic’s Jordan Kolstad 6-1, 6-2 in the final match of the weekend for him.
Thomas defeated both of his first opponents 6-0, 6-0 before falling to Bremerton’s Josh Scheving 6-3, 6-3 in the finals.
Participating teams included North, Bremerton, South Kitsap, Central Kitsap, Puyallup, North Mason, Enumclaw and Olympic.
“They all played pretty good,” said DeVries, noting that the Vikings have a lot of depth, especially from their eighth to 16th position.
