Suquamish Elementary gym addition breaks ground

The North Kitsap School District broke ground May 1 for the $4.5 million Suquamish Elementary gymnasium.

The project was approved by voters as part of the 2022 Capital Levy.

Project details include: 4,200-square-foot gym addition; separate, secure entrances for community use; and dedicated space for physical education classes, allowing increased flexibility for learning throughout the school, an NKSD news release states.

Student representatives from each grade joined Suquamish Tribal Council members and elected and district officials in the ceremonial turning of the dirt.

“Creating a space dedicated to physical education and to serve the community of Suquamish is essential for fostering holistic growth and community engagement,” NKSD interim superintendent Rachel Davenport said.

Tribal Chairman Leonard Forsman emphasized the historical importance of education as outlined in the Point Elliot Treaty signed by Chief Seattle in 1855. Forsman also acknowledged the generations who have attended Suquamish Elementary.

“The groundbreaking ceremony symbolizes the collective commitment to providing equitable access to quality education and facilities for all students,” the release states. “The addition of a dedicated gymnasium space not only addresses immediate needs but also honors the historical legacy of education within the Suquamish community.”
