KINGSTON — Pete DeBoer is pretty confident that residents of the Little City By the Sea will be able to enjoy the glow of fireworks over Apple Tree Cove this Fourth of July.

Despite the financial panic attacks that take place every year just prior to the event, this year’s fund-raising has been fairly successful, said DeBoer, who took over the monetary duties earlier this year from former Kingston Thriftway general manager Jim Raymond.

“I’ve had a lot of fun and met a lot of interesting people and am amazed at the generosity of the people, especially the ones that live along the cove,” DeBoer said.

To help pay off the event’s $15,000 price tag, DeBoer has been collecting donations from individuals and businesses. He has also organized fund-raisers, such as a recent car wash and pancake breakfast that earned $1,000 for the cause. However, the fund is approximately $2,000 short of its goal. The remaining funds are needed to pay for the fireworks’ barge.

DeBoer has some support lined up though, including the Kingston Junior High Builders Club’s car wash today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kingston Thriftway. DeBoer will also be taking donations during the Kingston Cove Yacht Club pancake breakfast on July 4 and will soon collect the Kingston Fireworks Fund jars that are in local businesses.

Commemorative Kingston fireworks buttons are also still available in local stores. This year’s button acknowledges the soldiers in the Middle East. All proceeds go to the fireworks fund.

While DeBoer said he is certain he is covering all the monetary bases this year, he noted that he would like to start creating a more solid financial foundation for the event.

“I can foresee (the $2,000) being covered pretty easily but I don’t want people to stop giving,” he said. “It’s always nice to have a cushion for the next year.”

The fireworks show is slated for 10 p.m. July 4 in Apple Tree Cove.
