Stepping out at the relay

Once again residents from North Kitsap and beyond converged at the high school track to support cancer research and awareness. And once again, they surpassed their financial goals.

Once again residents from North Kitsap and beyond converged at the high school track to support cancer research and awareness. And once again, they surpassed their financial goals.

But those who organized and participated in the 2004 Relay for Life did so much more. They made a positive difference, not just in their community but in the world as well.

Early tallies put funds raised during the 24-hour event at more than $118,000. That’s $33,000 above and beyond what was raised last year and $18,000 higher than the 2004 goal. Money for the American Cancer Society is still coming in. Phrases like “way to go” and “great job” seem a tad inadequate to thank those who gave time, money and effort to this worthy cause.

The deadly disease has touched us all in some form and while the Relay supports research financially, its primary goal is to ensure that those who have died at cancer’s hands are not forgotten and that the number being “touched” decreases each year.

A cure might be elusive but treatments are improving and countless women and men have lived to tell about their triumphs over cancer. Even in North Kitsap, the stories are numerous.

Unfortunately, so are the defeats.

We must continue to find strength and resolve in both and, whether through participation or fund-raising, continue to make sure the Relay keeps stepping out in North Kitsap until a cure is found.
