Smoke — and fire — on the water

Johnathan Miller claims the fireworks show in Port Gamble this weekend will have the biggest fireworks in the state, and he ought to know. Miller is the owner of Boomtown Fireworks, which regularly puts on pyrotechnic displays, including the Poulsbo Third of July celebration.

Friday night’s show features a whopping 16-inch shell, which in fireworks is huge, Miller said.

The fireworks shows are the centerpiece of a new event in Port Gamble, “Old Mill Days and Country Carnival,” running June 9, 10 and 11 at Port Gamble.

Miller is organizing the event and donating between $150,000 and $200,000 in firepower for the weekend.

In addition to fireworks shows Friday and Saturday night at 10 p.m., Miller said there will also be a daylight display from 8-10 p.m. Friday using colored smoke instead of explosions. All the pyrotechnics will be set off from a barge in the harbor.

Other activities planned for the festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, are a carnival, food and craft booths, a beer garden, and musical performances.

Miller said the carnival is also huge, with an 80-foot high gondola-type Ferris wheel.

“You can watch the fireworks from the top of the Ferris wheel,” Miller suggested.

Car clubs from around the county are invited to attend, and close to 200 autos are expected.

“They get the best parking,” Miller said. All other attendees will be asked to park on the old Port Gamble mill site for a small fee, where a Kitsap Transit shuttle will take them to the festival site in downtown Port Gamble.

Musical acts confirmed at press time are guitarist Lee McDowell, 1 p.m. and country/rock music with the Warren Brothers, 8 p.m June 9; and rock bands Cone, 6-7 p.m. and Hit Sensation 8 p.m. June 10. Sunday wraps up with classic rock by Hard Livin’ at 1 p.m.

Miller said the beer garden, for those 21 and over, will have a view of both the fireworks and the stage.
