In order to keep the community well informed of the South Kitsap School District’s financial situation, the public is invited to attend a School Board work study session Wednesday, April 24, at 6 p.m. in the SKHS Theater.

“Our budget situation is serious,”said Interim Superintendent Bev Cheney. “The district has to find ways to reduce the budget by $2.5 million or more.”

SKSD is having to make difficult decisions for the 2013-14 school year as a result of decreased enrollment over the past 10-plus years, a deficit in the ending fund balance for 2011-12, impact of sequestration on federal funds and local economy, increased costs for services and utilities, contract negotiation, along with other factors.

School board members and Superintendent Cheney will present information regarding the financial challenges the district faces and discuss the options that are being considered, among those is a reduction in force.

Time for questions from the audience will follow.
