Silverdale man involved in Clallam County officer shooting

A Clallam County Sheriff’s deputy and a 59 year-old Silverdale man were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center following a shooting Monday near Neah Bay.

At 1:30 p.m., 41 year-old Deputy William Cortani was dispatched to a trespassing call near Ray’s Grocery on State Route 112, just east of Neah Bay. Initial reports indicated a man was seen inside an abandoned house.

Cortani arrived at the scene at 1:32 p.m. He advised dispatchers he was placing a suspect in custody at 1:35 p.m. Minutes later, at 1:37 p.m., Cortani advised dispatchers that shots were exchanged between himself and the suspect.

Cortani was wearing a protective vest, and suffered gunshot wounds to the hip and arm, which are not considered life threatening. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The suspect was struck numerous times. He also was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. His condition or extent of his injuries is unknown.

Cortani is a Forks resident and has been a deputy with the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office for 18 years.

The Washington State Patrol is handling the investigation into the shooting, in partnership with the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
