Shelter training being held Jan. 26

The training will take place in the Kingston Community Center, 11212 State Highway 104, Kingston.

KINGSTON — On Jan. 26, from 7-9 p.m., Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management will hold an orientation and training session for those interested in joining the volunteers who staff Kingston’s Severe Weather Shelter.

The training will take place in the Kingston Community Center, 11212 State Highway 104, Kingston.

Kingston’s Severe Weather Shelter opened Dec. 1 at its temporary location in the North Kitsap Fire & Rescue headquarters on Miller Bay Road. The shelter, operated by Kingston Cares, has served seven individuals in its 10 nights of operation. The shelter is hosted by a small core of volunteers who have worked 60 shifts.

The shelter’s new location will be at the Kingston Community Center and occupancy is expected to increase as a result of the more convenient, central location.

New volunteers are asked to complete and submit the Department of Emergency Management background applications prior to attending the training. Those forms are available at www.kitsapdem.org and may be returned to Department of Emergency Management office assistant Michele Moen.

To reserve a spot at the training session or for more information about Kingston’s Severe Weather Shelter, call Jane Mack at 360-620-1957 or Mary Gleysteen at 360-297-3894.
