Severe weather shelters will be open on Thanksgiving

BREMERTON — The Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management will open three severe weather shelters on Thanksgiving Day.

Shelter locations:

  • Port Orchard United Methodist Church, 725 Kitsap St., Port Orchard.
  • Silverdale United Methodist Church, 9982 Silverdale Way, Silverdale.
  • Village Green Community Center, 26159 Dulay Road NE, Kingston.

Shelter hours: 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. (Village Green shelter hours: 6 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.). “Guests will not be able to check into the shelter after 9 p.m.,” according to the Department of Emergency Management. “If no guests have checked into a shelter location by 9 p.m., that location will close for the evening.”

The severe weather shelters serve all residents in the area who require safe overnight refuge when hazardous weather conditions are expected. Future activations will be weather dependent — when nighttime temperatures are expected to drop to freezing, or there will be an inch of rain or an inch of snow in a 24-hour period.
