Severe-weather shelters open; evening temps below freezing

The Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management is activating the county’s Severe Weather Shelter Plan because of below-freezing evening temperatures.

KINGSTON — The Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management is activating the county’s Severe Weather Shelter Plan because of below-freezing evening temperatures.

Both shelters will be open Dec. 31, with the Bremerton location also offering shelter the evening of Jan. 1. Information on any additional evenings for the shelter at the North Kitsap Fire & Rescue station can be verified by calling 211.

Hours of operation will be 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. Guests will not be able to check into the shelter after 10 p.m. If you need transportation to an emergency shelter, contact North Kitsap Fishline or ShareNet for a Kitsap Transit fare voucher.

The locations:

— Bremerton Food Line, 1600 12th St., Bremerton.
— North Kitsap Fire & Rescue, 26642 Miller Bay Road NE, Kingston.

The National Weather Service issued the following forecast on New Year’s Eve.

Dec. 31: Sunny with a high near 40 and north wind around 6 mph. Evening, partly cloudy with a low around 28, and north wind 3-5 mph.

Jan. 1: Partly sunny with a high near 40 and calm wind. Evening, mostly cloudy with a low around 30, and calm wind.

Jan. 2: A 30 percent chance of rain after 10 a.m.; cloudy, with a high near 43 and south wind 3-8 mph. Evening, a 30 percent chance of showers; cloudy, with a low around 38.

Jan. 3: Cloudy with a high near 44. Evening, a chance of rain; cloudy with a low around 39.

Jan. 4: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 46. Evening, rain likely; cloudy, with a low around 41.
