Fifteen teams from West Coast salons and spas competed last weekend at the Afton Manor in Seattle in what was called a “Trashion Show” to highlight trash, fashion and Mother Earth.

Teams strutted their stuff and rocked the runway to celebrate Earth Month and partnered with Puget Sound Keeper Alliance, a nonprofit ecological group based in Seattle. (www.pugetsoundkeeper.org)

Stylist teams configured hair and makeup to complement “fashion” made of trash and other recycled goods.

Seaport Salon & Spa in Old Town Silverdale was awarded best hair and makeup. There inspiration was a “ship wreck” inspired by “over time the ship wreck becomes a new habitat for sea life”.  According to Seaport Salon & Spa owner Jen Horne, zero dollar were used to make their fashion. Materials included debris from local beaches, plastic trash bags crochet into star fish, paper beads, repurposed hair capes, color tube caps, broken mirrors and jewelry.

Seaport Salon & Spa was awarded a textile stamp plaque that is 100 years old and once was used to imprint fabric from Ancient India. It is display at Seaport Salon & Spa. The dress will also be displayed at Seaport Salon & Spa during May.

“Trashion designs were so unique,” said Horne. “So many colors of trash, truly amazing to see what you can do with a little imagination.”

Also used in some fashions were recycled color tubes, paper, woven plastics, herb-dyed coffee filters and sugar glitter.

Seaport Salon & Spa also raised more than $13,000 for Puget Sound Keeper Alliance.

Seaport’s design team, Megan Philpot, Gina McGraw and Shawna Schofield, devoted several hours to complete project under the direction of team leader Inga Rici. The model was Meg Burns.
