POULSBO — Jeremy Schumacher of Poulsbo will be honored by the American Red Cross for rescuing two girls pulled out by the tide in Hood Canal.

Schumacher will receive the Water Rescue Award at the West Sound Heroes Breakfast on May 9, 7-9 a.m. at the Kitsap Conference Center at Bremerton Harborside.

On June 30, 2012, a neighbor in the Edgewater area heard the girls screaming and dialed 911. Schumacher, a retired Navy diver, put on his dry suit, grabbed two life vests and swam out to them. All three were plucked out of the water by firefighters in a neighbor’s boat.

“The Heroes Breakfast is a crucial part of the Red Cross in Kitsap and North Mason counties,” said Karen McKay Bevers, director of the Red Cross West Sound office.

“We take this time every year to honor those in our community who have gone above and beyond. This year’s heroes are no exception. Every one of them deserves special recognition for coming to the aid of others.”

The breakfast also raises funds to help support local Red Cross programs and services. Puget Sound Energy is this year’s leadership sponsor. Award sponsors include Harrison Medical Center, Kitsap Credit Union, Port Madison Enterprises, United Moving & Storage and KPS Health Plans.

Other honorees include two Mountain View Middle School students who took control of their school bus when the driver was stricken with a gall bladder attack; and the Armin Jarh Elementary School teacher who provided first aid to a student who was accidentally shot.
