Poulsbo residents make the Dean’s List

Boston — Poulsbo’s Laurie S. Tolman was named to the Dean’s List at Boston University for the Spring semester. Boston University is the fourth largest independent university in the United States, with an enrollment of more than 29,000 students in its 17 schools and colleges. The university offers an exceptional grounding in the liberal arts, a broad range of programs in the arts, sciences, engineering, and professional areas, and state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research.

Savannah, Ga. — Ariel Erickson of Poulsbo was named to the Dean’s List at the Savannah College of Art and Design for spring quarter 2008. Full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade point average of 3.5 or above for the quarter receive recognition on the dean’s list. Erickson is a historic preservation major.

Poulsbo student wins state

sustainability competition

Katie Butler, s Poulsbo Elementary fifth-grader, is Washington’s winner of the state Igniting Creative Energy Challenge, an educational competition sponsored by Johnson Controls that encourages North American students to develop ingenious ways to conserve energy and protect the environment.

Butler’s winning project is an essay that discusses the advantages and disadvantages of plastic bottles. She highlights the importance of recycling plastic along with alternatives to soft non-reusable plastic bottles. a Johnson Controls representative will present Butler with a $1,000 check for her school and a 2GB flash audio (MP3) player for herself.

Ivar’s unveils first 4th of

Jul-Ivar’s poster contest winner

Poulsbo eighth-grader Naomi Newlin is the winner of Ivar’s first 4th of Jul-Ivars poster contest. She won Artistic “Acclam” and “500 Clams” in Ivar’s gift cards. On June 11 Newlin unveiled her art and accepted her grand prize and award at Ivar’s Acres of Clams, Pier 54, Seattle.

The inaugural contest called for student artwork from artists aged 12 to 18 over a six-week period, and Newlin, a 14-year-old home-schooled student will have her masterpiece featureded across all 2008 4th of Jul-Ivar’s promotions.

goodbye to three veteran teachers

This June PMS says “goodbye” to three veteran teachers; Sue Kaizuka, Eileen Angilletta, and Cynthia Abbey, who’ve dedicated their professional lives to the children of our community. While they’ll be sorely missed, they’re wished the best in the many new adventures awaiting them.

On a lighter note the sixth-grade students earned class of the year. They did this by accumulating the greatest number of spirit points over the course of the year.

Interact Club officers named

North Kitsap and Kingston High Schools have installed their Interact club officers for the 2008-2009 school year. NKHS officers will be Conner Gallagher, president; Melissa Kunold, vice-president; Ali Howe, secretary; Megan Herndon, treasurer; Mack Kunold, historian and Tolen McGrego, public relations. KHS Interact officers are Taylor Wall, president; Ashley Larson, vice-president and Jordan Wall, treasurer. Interact is a service and social club for young people age 14-18. Each club is sponsored by a Rotary club, which guides the Interactors in developing local and international service programs. If interested in joining Interact contact Brenda Wall at (360)-710-1069.

Ninth-graders are eligible

to take August 2008 WASL

Students who were in grade nine during the spring 2008 WASL testing are eligible to participate in the August 2008 testing. Because ninth grade reports are available early to students and they will know their WASL status in June, they’re now eligible to register for the August administration.

All eligible students can register for the August WASL, scheduled for August 11-14, at www.k12.wa.us/waslregistration or by calling 866-400-WASL (9275). Students must have as SSID to register.
