The South Kitsap School District Board of Directors will meet on Thursday, June 6, at 5:30 p.m. at Mullenix Ridge Elementary School, 3900 SE Mullenix Rd.

The original meeting was set for June 5, but was moved to June 6 because of the Explorer Academy graduation.

During the meeting, the school district will host its annual staff recognition event that will recognize SKSD employees who are either retiring or celebrating their 25th year of employment (classified or certificated) in public education.

Also, the Board will act on Superintendent Bev Cheney’s recommendation to non-renew employment contracts for provisional employees.

Of the 68 positions proposed to be cut by the district, 33 positions would be eliminated due to the $2.5 budget reduction, but 25 would remain open because of retirement and resignations.

The district sent out 57 letters to employees whose position would be eliminated by the cuts. The district wanted to give people a chance to find employment elsewhere, Cheney said.

Over the past five years, Cheney said the district avoided cutting teachers and employees, but cutting in other areas of the budget. Funds from the district’s reserve and local levy helped make up the budget gap because of declining enrollment and state budget cuts.

Cheney met with employees who received a Reduction in Force (RIF) notice. Employees where given the opportunity to refute any facts upon which the superintendent’s determination was based and to make any argument in support of his or her request for consideration.

Other items set for discussion and approval are a $2,500 donation fro Quinault Indian Nation to provide Indian Education Program academic support for summer school or tutoring and declaring surplus equipment from the Technology department.
