Rocky Point mobile home fire caused by melted wax, stove

ROCKY POINT — A structure fire on Rocky Point Road fully engulfed and destroyed a mobile home Tuesday morning.

The Bremerton Fire Department, with support from South Kitsap Fire and Rescue, responded to a fire at the Rocky Point Mobile Home Park at 9 a.m.

The double-wide trailer was home to an elderly woman who had been making candles in her kitchen. Melted wax spilled onto a stove burner and a fire was quickly sparked. The woman made a brief attempt to push the pot away from the stove, but the fire rapidly spread up into the cabinets, so she escaped the trailer and called for emergency responders.

The woman was unharmed, said Bremerton Battalion Chief John Payne. She was treated at the scene for minor first-degree burns on her hands. Her double-wide trailer, however, was completely obliterated, though firefighters were able to save a few items. Fortunately, Payne said, the woman does have family in the area and a place to stay.

“It’s a total loss,” Payne said. “The whole thing got run through.”

Bremerton firefighters were dispatched back to the Rocky Point Mobile Home Park later that day after a neighbor reported smoke at the location of the fire. However, the smoke was caused by smoldering insulation that was outside the trailer.
